The Potter and the Lump of Clay

Long ago and far away, in a small village nestled into the mountains, there lived a potter. He worked hard every day forming pots and other vessels out of the best clay he could get his hands on. He loved his work even though it was painstaking. Some days the clay was too dry, so he would have to spend a long time softening it. Other days the clay would just not center on his wheel. But even though the work was not easy, he would always return to his little home at the end of the day feeling very satisfied because he knew that he had done all that he could to turn those lumps of clay into something useful. Every pot he made served a specific purpose. Some where made to store water, others were fashioned for cooking, and some were made into vases and candle holders. The potter loved every vessel that he made regardless of its use. He loved the plain water-pot just as much as he loved his most elaborate ornaments. They were all made by his hands and therefore he valued each one of them.
One sunny morning, the potter was once again working on a new vessel, when all of a sudden that lump of clay started to speak! Now I know that lumps of clay usually don't speak, but this one did. "It's not fair that you are making a plain old water pot out of me", said the lump of clay. "Why can't I be beautiful and admired like that beautiful vase over there, or be as exquisite as the candle holder over there? Why must I be a water pot??" The potter was very saddened by the lump of clay's words, but with a gentle voice he replied: "My dear lump of clay, just because you are meant to be a water pot does not mean that you are of less value. I need you to be a water pot because that is how you can serve best. Just think of the influence that you will have. Everybody needs a water pot! You can serve just as many people as you could if you were a candle holder or beautiful vase. I made you the way you are because I have a specific mission for you to accomplish."

I am sure that by now you have identified the message I am trying to convey. I don't know about you, but I know that for myself that I often wish I could do something greater for God. I don't just want to be a humble water pot, but rather I find myself longing for positions of recognition and admiration.
God put us in a specific place for a specific reason. We have a purpose to fulfill no matter where we are, and no matter what our talents may be. God does not have the same work for every person, but He does want for us to faithful in whatever He gives us to do. Oh that we may not worry about the humbleness of our tasks, but rather focus on doing that which is given us to the best of our abilities!
